Long Tail – infinite shelf space

June 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is something you can do – everyone can do! and it is really easy and extremely powerful. if you can write a few words then you can do this.

 What is “long tail”

Prior to watching the videos I just want to explain what long tail is in its simplest form with an example

The average Walmart carries about 25,000 music tracks Rhapsody the online music service carries 1.5 million tracks  those 1,475,000 tracks that you can’t buy in walmart add up to about 50% of the music market, and that 50% is growing.

The “long tail”  and infinite shelf space effects everything about 50% of everything you want to buy in a traditional store is not available to buy in that store.

Why am I telling you this?

The reason I wanted you to understand long tail is because it’s extremely important for promoting your website.

in the video below Wired editor and author Chris Anderson explains his theory of “The Long Tail,” using the music and film industries as examples…

its a big technical to start with but well worth watching to the end
